HVAC/Air-Conditioning System Decontamination and Treatment

Conventional cleaning products that people use to clean their air-conditioners consist of strong acid and alkali which are toxic and hazardous to human health, equipment, water table and even to the environment. Did you know the HVAC/Air-Conditioning System components consist of aluminium and plastic? Based on what we analysed, 90% of HVAC/Air-Conditioning System components are aluminium, and another 10% of the part is plastic. Besides, based on scientific research, acid and alkaline chemicals are hazardous substances, therefore when the acid or alkaline touches any part of the ceilings or walls, it will cause oxidation, alas, and the aesthetics of the building will be damaged. Most importantly, the probability of injury is high too, because acid and alkaline chemicals are not safe for people.

In order to dissolve away the dirt and debris from the HVAC/Air-Conditioning System components, using chemical cleaners is not practical as it consumes more water and more time to disassemble and reassemble parts before and after cleaning service. Besides that, it will eventually oxidise and corrode the cooling coil fins, blowers and any other parts of the HVAC/Air-Conditioning System. When the cooling coils are corroded and fins are bent, it will definitely block the airflow and cause a blockage. When it happens, the airflow is increased, energy efficiency is significantly dropped and the system is not working as intended then leads to a loss in thermal comfort, more complaints and high CAPEX.

The type of HVAC/ Air-Conditioning System

1. Air Handling Unit (AHU)

    • The bigger and thicker cooling coil, more clogged up biofilms or jelly, mould, and bacteria inside the evaporator coil.
    • This has a big impact on energy saving and equipment life-span.
    • Rust and corrosion is the biggest expense and caused most of the issues such as breakdown. When it happens, new machines are needed which is not cost effective.

2. Fan Coil Unit (FCU)

    • A simple device consisting of a heating or cooling coil and fan.
    • A part of HVAC System that can be found in household, residential and industrial buildings.
    • Fan coil unit or FCU is not connected to ductwork, and is used to control the temperature in the area where it installed, or a serve of multiple spaces.
    • FCU is controlled either manually or by thermostat.

3. Split Unit

Air Handling Unit (AHU) and Fan Coil Unit (FCU) usually can be found in industrial and commercial areas, as they need large spaces to install these units. Wall-Mounted and Ceiling Cassettes are generally in homes due to their size being much smaller and more practical. But, don’t be surprised it also can be found in commercial areas such as shopping malls, supermarkets, restaurants, and offices. Nevertheless, the HVAC/Air-Conditioning unit can be in any indoor environment since they can provide thermal comfort to the occupants considering our hot weather, especially in the daytime.
